After finishing secondary school in 1952, he graduated from the Moscow Aviation Institute in 1958 as an aerospace engineer.
He studied at school at Department of Central design bureau of experimental machine building (1966-1968). After defending his thesis in 1968 he received a degree of candidate of technical Sciences.
From July 3, 1958 he worked as an engineer of the 9th division, from December 1, 1960 - senior engineer, from October 17, 1962 - chief of OKB-1 (p/n 651). He was engaged in the design of the Martian manned spacecraft (TMK).
From September 6, 1964 he worked as the head of the group of the 17th division.
On May 23, 1966 he were enrolled in 731 section Department of Central design bureau of experimental machine building by chief of the group of candidates in cosmonauts – investigator.
May 27, 1968, by MOM order No. 163 was enrolled in 731 section (the cosmonaut corps) of Department of Central design bureau of experimental machine building. From October 11, 1973 – in 071 Department, from January 1, 1975 – in 111 Department of GKB NPO “Energia”, from May 5, 1977 - the head of the 110 Department.
On 7 July 1981 he was appointed as deputy director of the complex. On January 1, 1982 was appointed as head of the 29th service. After leaving the cosmonaut corps on December 6, 1993 he continued to work as deputy director of the 5th branch of the GKB NPO “Energia”.
Since November 28, 1997 he worked as a scientific consultant in the 887th department of RSC “Energia”.
In may - June, 1964 was sent for a medical examination in NIAG as one of 14 candidates from OKB-1 to fly on first triple of the spacecraft "Voskhod" (the target set of "Sunrise") as a cosmonaut engineer. In June 1964, he was admitted to special training by the medical Commission. His candidacy was considered at the meeting of the Mandate Commission on 11 June 1964, but he was not recommended for admission to the group.
In July 1965, underwent a medical examination at IBMP as a member of the first set of astronauts to the detachment of OKB-1 (now RSC Energia) and was one of 12 engineers who passed all stages of selection.
In the spring of 1966, after the emergence of the order No. 25 at the initiative of the development in the flight test Department No. 90 group training testers were sent for re-examination at IBMP, which again was successful. On may 23, 1966 he passed the mandate Commission at TsKBEM and by order Of V. p. Mishin №43 was included in the first group of candidates for test cosmonauts of TsKBEM.
From may to August 1966 he passed training in TsKBEM as a member of the cosmonaut candidates group.
From September 1966 to December 1968 he passed direct training for the flight as a flight engineer of the second crew of the Soyuz passive QC under the program
"Docking", together with A. Nikolaev and V. Gorbatko (in August 1968 A. Nikolaeva was replaced by A. Filipchenko). On January 15, 1969, during the launch of Soyuz-5, he was the backup of the spacecraft flight engineer.
From February to July 1969 he passed training as flight engineer of the first crew of Soyuz-6 SC under the program of group flight of three manned SC together with G. Shonin. From July to September 1969 he passed training under the same program in the mode of maintaining training due to flight delays.
From August 22, 1977 to June 9, 1978 he was trained as commander of the second (backup) Soviet-Polish crew under the visiting expedition program (EP) OS "Salyut-6", together with Z. Yankovsky (pnrm.). On June 27, 1978, during the launch of Soyuz-30, he was the backup of the spacecraft commander.
From November 20, 1978 to May 18, 1979 he passed direct training for the flight as commander of the first crew on the program of the Soviet-Hungarian visiting expedition (EP) OS "Salyut-6", together with B. Farkash (VNR). The flight was postponed because of an accident of the corrective-braking propulsion system (KTDU) at “Soyuz-33”. In this regard, from September 3, 1979 to May 12, 1980, he continued training in the maintenance mode of traning in the same crew on the same program.
1 flight - from 11 to 16 October 1969 as a flight engineer of “Soyuz-6” together with G. Shonin.
