William Holman Cartwright studied at the University of Minnesota, where he received a Bachelor's degree in Science in 1937, a Master's degree in 1942, and his Doctor of Philosophy in 1950.
While in graduate school, Cartwright earned his living as an elementary and high school teacher at Public school, Mabel, Minnesota, from 1937 to 1940; Public school, Rochester, Minnesota, in 1940-1943; and University High School, Minneapolis, from 1943 to 1945. He worked as an instructor, Macalester College in 1944. William served as a historian at Military District, Washington, in 1945-1946.
His first university post was at the University of Minneapolis, where he was an instructor from 1943 to 1945. During the late 1940s, in 1946-1950, he taught at Boston University as an associate professor, before moving to Duke, where he was named professor of education in 1950-1951. Cartwright stayed at Duke University from 1951 to 1982. He chaired his department from 1951 to 1965 and from 1967 to 1970. He was a visiting professor at the Summers University of California in 1950 and at University of Colorado in 1957.
Cartwright's first book “The Military District of Washington during the War Years” was written in 1946, “How to Use a Textbook” in 1961, “Clio: A Muse Bemused” in 1963 and “The Reinterpretation of American History and Culture” 1973, the last being a book he edited with Richard L. Watson.
Cartwright was a member of numerous organizations such as National Council for the Social Studies (president 1957), Southern Council on Teacher Education (president 1959), American History Association, National Education Association, North Carolina Council for the Social Studies, Phi Delta Kappa, Phi Alpha Theta, Pi Gamma Mu, Kappa Delta Pi.
William Holman Cartwright was married to Elaine Mary McGladrey. They had three children, John Morris, Mary Elaine, and Margaret.
