Mr. Maltby was born in Cleveland, Ohio, United States, on October 23, 1940.
William Saunders Maltby finished Hiram College, receiving his Bachelor of Arts in 1962. He graduated from Duke University, obtaining Master of Arts in 1965 and Doctor of Philosophy in 1967.
Mr. Maltby occupied the post of an assistant professor of history at Ohio University, Athens, from 1966 to 1968. He was an assistant professor of history at University of Missouri, St. Louis, between 1968 and 1970, associate professor, 1970-1982, and professor since 1982.
His academic studies have concentrated largely on the period known as the Reformation, when Protestant and Roman Catholic factions battled across Europe for territoria hegemony. Mr. Maltby’s first book, The Black Legend in England: The Development of Anti-Spanish Sentiment' 1558-1660, was based on his doctoral dissertation at Duke University. William Maltby’s second book is a study of Fernando Alvarez de Toledo or "Alba," one of the Reformation’s most reviled political figures.
