This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1877 Excerpt: ...the conclusion that the digit and 20-6 cubit were independent; if they had not been so, the digits forming integral parts of the cubit would certainly have been noted; but the cubit being decimally divided, as is seen in the list of examples of it, the 28 digits had so little connection with the decimal scale that they were apparently regarded as having nothing to do with each other. Thus ten of the eleven independent standards of measures, found inductively from the Egyptian monuments, are represented, on the cubit rods, or simply connected with those so shown: affording a very strong confirmation of the results in this case, where they can be tested by contemporary evidence. (46) The sceptres borne by officials on the early Egyptian tombs are worth notice. The usual length of the thin part is 64 squares of the canon of proportion, and the thick end squares more. There being 19 squares to the height of a man, this gives the length of the thin part as about 23 inches, and the total 28£. This seems as if the lengths of these rods might be 32 and 40 digits (23-3 and 29-1 inches); and what supports the idea of such multiples of the digit, is the probability (from various sources) that the digit is a binary fraction of an original unit, as we find 8 digits marked on the cubit rods, and 16 and 32 digits formed Pelasgic and Etrurian units. The form of a thin length agreeing to one unit, and a thicker addition making the total give another unit, is found in the Edfou Nilometer. CHAPTER V. Babylonia, Assyria, Persia, And Syria. Babylonia And Assyria. (47) These countries are classed together, as being so intermixed in the style of their art and the nature of their remains. The dates are given in years B.C., marked with the minus sign. The digits and their mult...

'The Pyramids and Temples of Gizeh' is a scholarly work on the surveying and construction of one of the world's ancient wonders. William Matthew Flinders Petrie was born on 3rd July 1853 in Kent, England, son of Wlilliam Petrie and Ann née Flinders. He showed an early interest in the field of archaeology and by his teenage years was surveying local Roman monuments near his family home. Flinders Petrie continued to have many successes in Egypt and Palestine throughout his career, most notably, his discovery of the Mernepte stele, a stone tablet depicting scenes from ancient times. His excellent methodology and plethora of finds earned him a Knighthood for his services to archaeology in 1923.

A pioneering Egyptologist, Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie (1853-1942) excavated over fifty sites and trained a generation of archaeologists. Ernest A. Gardner (1862-1939) was to become a leading classical archaeologist, but his first major project was carrying on the work of Petrie at Naukratis, the ancient Greek colony in the Nile Delta that Petrie had discovered in 1884. Reissued here together are Petrie's initial excavation report of 1886 and Gardner's 1888 continuation, each with many illustrations and material contributed by specialists on certain topics. Notably, the finds of inscribed pottery yielded significant insights into how the Greek alphabet developed. The final component included here is Petrie's 1889 report covering recent digs, particularly his discovery of a Roman necropolis and dozens of remarkable mummy portraits at Hawara. He wrote prolifically throughout his long career, and a great many of his other publications are also reissued in this series.

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Leopold Classic Library is delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive collection. As part of our on-going commitment to delivering value to the reader, we have also provided you with a link to a website, where you may download a digital version of this work for free. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. Whilst the books in this collection have not been hand curated, an aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature. As a result of this book being first published many decades ago, it may have occasional imperfections. These imperfections may include poor picture quality, blurred or missing text. While some of these imperfections may have appeared in the original work, others may have resulted from the scanning process that has been applied. However, our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. While some publishers have applied optical character recognition (OCR), this approach has its own drawbacks, which include formatting errors, misspelt words, or the presence of inappropriate characters. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with an experience that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic book, and that the occasional imperfection that it might contain will not detract from the experience.

A pioneering Egyptologist, Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie (1853-1942) excavated over fifty sites and trained a generation of archaeologists. The two excavation reports now reissued here together were first published in 1891 and 1892 respectively, written in collaboration with other experts. They outline significant finds at the pyramids of Lahun and Meidum, and at Gurob and Kahun, notably the latter's cache of Middle Kingdom papyri. Petrie and his collaborators describe in detail how they came to make these discoveries, shedding light on developing archaeological practices used towards the end of the nineteenth century. Petrie's professional method of painstakingly recording every find is well demonstrated here, and each report includes a section of valuable illustrative material. Petrie wrote prolifically throughout his long career, and a great many of his other publications - for both specialists and non-specialists - are also reissued in this series.

During the age of the decline of Egyptian power inS yria, when the great conquests ofT ahutmes I. were all gradually lost, a splendid store of information was laid by for us in the cuneiform correspondence at Tell el A marna. The clay tablets, mostly from Syria, but with a few duplicates of letters fromE gypt, were deposited inT he place of the records of the palace of the king, as it is called upon the stamped bricks which I found still remaining there. A few years ago the natives, while plundering about the ruins and carrying off Akhenaten sbricks for their modern houses, lit upon this record chamber containing many hundreds of tablets. A pioneering Egyptologist, Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie (1853-1942) excavated over fifty sites and trained a generation of archaeologists. In the early 1890s, he carried out significant work at Tell el-Amarna, the site of the ancient capital of Akhetaten. The illustrated 1894 excavation report that he co-authored has also been reissued in this series, along with many of his other publications. Petrie played a notable part in the preservation of a number of cuneiform tablets that became known collectively as the Tell el-Amarna letters. In this 1898 work, he presents summaries of the most important documents. They offer insights into war, peace and diplomacy in the Near East during the reigns of Amenhotep III and Akhenaten in the fourteenth century BCE. Informative notes on individuals and places mentioned in the letters help set them in context, while the methods used to interpret them are also elucidated.

Among the leading Egyptologists of his day, Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie (1853-1942) excavated over fifty sites and trained a generation of archaeologists. This single-volume reissue brings together two of his well-illustrated excavation reports. The first, originally published in 1896, covers the work undertaken in 1893-4 at Koptos (modern-day Qift), a key settlement in Upper Egypt on the Nile's east bank. This includes a chapter on classical inscriptions by David George Hogarth (1862-1927). The second report, first published in 1909, discusses recent archaeological work around Qurna in the Theban necropolis, including the discovery of an intact royal burial dating from the seventeenth dynasty. The epigraphic material is addressed in a chapter by James Herbert Walker (d.1914). Petrie wrote prolifically throughout his long career, and a great many of his other publications - for both specialists and non-specialists - are also reissued in this series.

'Naqada and Ballas' is a detailed scholarly work on the history of Egypt and the findings of an archaeological dig.

(A pioneering Egyptologist, Sir William Matthew Flinders P...)
A pioneering Egyptologist, Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie (1853-1942) excavated over fifty sites and trained a generation of archaeologists. This single-volume reissue brings together two of his well-illustrated excavation reports. The first, originally published in 1897, describes work on six of the temples at Thebes, including the discovery of the famous Merneptah Stele, which contains the first non-biblical reference to Israel. A chapter on this inscription and others found in the temples is provided by the German scholar Wilhelm Spiegelberg (1870-1930). The second report, first published in 1896, discusses the archaeological work carried out at Naqada and Ballas by Petrie and James Edward Quibell (1867-1935), with a chapter by F. C. J. Spurrell (1842-1915) on the flint implements found at Naqada. Petrie wrote prolifically throughout his long career, and a great many of his other publications - for both specialists and non-specialists - are also reissued in this series.

Not illustrated. 1897 Excerpt: ... 26, 27, seem to be crowbars, as several were uniformly bent up at one end; these show then the only crowbars yet known from Egypt. The hoes, 28, 29, 30, are of the type well known in later Egyptian bronze, where the flat sheet of metal is wrapped round the handle. The axe, 31, is of the usual type; as are also the adze, 32, and knife, 33. The knife with a spur on it, 34, is a new form, the meaning of which is obscure. The mortise chisel, 35 and flat chisel, 36, are of the usual forms. The ebony cramp, 37, is a model of the wooden cramps used for linking together the stones of a building, and bears the cartouche with the title Neb taut. The two model corn grinders of yellow quartzite have the nefer signs and a border line painted on in black. A piece of red glass, 39, is partly decomposed to yellow; what it represents is unknown. Besides these small objects there were also in five of the deposits a block of sandstone (XVII, 2) bearing the two cartouches of Tausert carefully engraved. And in one deposit a brick of coarse mortar (XVII, 1) which has been stamped with the cartouche; it has been laid in the hole while soft, and pressed out of shape, and further trodden upon. Many jars were found, as fig. 5, and some bowls and pans, figs. 8, 9, 10; a large number of little cups, figs. 4, 6, were in most of the deposits; and a few handles of jars are also drawn here, for the sake of dated types. Some of the potsherds bear inscriptions, which were written on them as datings of wine, when the jars were in use (XIX, 1-4). Of animal offerings there was a calf s haunch in deposits I, 4, and 6; and a call's head in deposits 4 and 6; a pigeon's head in deposit 6, and a pigeon in deposit I. In deposit 7 was a thick bed of leaves of a tree mixed with beads above the glazed...

The amulets (pl. xxvi.) are mostly made of a coarse blue glazed ware, moulded, and sometimes painted with detail in black. As this is the most complete series known of this age all the varieties are here published in photograph. They may be classified as follows:--Osiriá standing, mummified. Isis winged, standing. Nebhat, „ „ Isis „ kneeling. Nebhat „ „ Uaz, papyrus plant. Reed, a. Frame of garlands for the breast. Deep coJlar, hawk's head ends. Pectoral, Osiris and hawk. Star. Carpenter's square. „ plummet stand. „ stand with plummet. Head-rest. Double seal. Ankh. Girdle tie. Dad. Dad crowned. This gives sixty-five varieties, beside two or three small forms which are so rough as to be unintelligible. 38. The position of these amulets is variable, and they seem to have been put on with only a rough regard to symmetry. Some, however, are tolerably constant in position. The mourning Isis and Nebhat are on the ehoulders; below them the four genii, two on either side. An ига eye is also on each shoulder. The jackal is generally on the hips; the hawk on the shoulders or hips. The winged scarab is usually on the breastbone. The star is twice on the neck, once on the navei. The dad is usually on the navei. Of course these amulets are by no means always present in a group, but these are the general positions when they do occur. The whole question of the position of amulets needs to be studied together; but, unhappily, there is scarcely any information on it except what I have observed at Nebesheh and Hawara. Broadly, the positions mostly remain the same in each of the...

(A pioneering Egyptologist, Sir William Matthew Flinders P...)
A pioneering Egyptologist, Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie (1853-1942) excavated over fifty sites and trained a generation of archaeologists. These three illustrated excavation reports, now reissued together, were originally published in 1898, 1901 and 1908 in collaboration with other experts. They focus on the cemeteries at Deshasheh, Abadiyeh and Hu (the latter known also as Diospolis Parva), and Athribis. Light is shed on the major discoveries, such as large quantities of beautifully preserved Neolithic linen, the 'pan graves' of semi-nomadic settlers, and a tomb featuring an early relief of Egyptians besieging a fortified Near Eastern town. Most significantly, these reports reflect Petrie's development of sequence dating, which influenced the use of seriation as a relative dating method in archaeology. Petrie wrote prolifically throughout his long career. Many of his other publications - for both Egyptologists and non-specialists - are also reissued in this series.

Not illustrated. 1901 Excerpt: ... The tongue of land in the valley and the east side are pierced with dozens of old rock tombs; but so many burials have been made here in recent times (particularly from the fatal accident at the Farshut bridge, the many deaths from which were largely concealed) that the natives will not allow the graves to be examined. From the square Shekh's tomb at the corner for half a mile inward are many moder n tombs, up to the great modern cemetery, at which it is said that seventy towns and villages now bury. As there is no other dyke up to the desert for many miles, this is the only outlet for the burials of a large population. The cemetery U at post 180, is entirely of the prehistoric, beginning at the earliest age. It was cleared by Mr. MacIver. About 140 to 150 are little patches of cultivation in the mouths of the valleys. At post 12fi is the cemetery R. which is also prehistoric, cleared by Mr. MacIver. Behind 120 is a mound with Roman pottery, back in the desert, which would seem to have been an outpost fort, about four miles from the large fort at Diospolis. After passing low broken ground, much used for Arab encampments, we reach the village of Shekh Ali. Just east of that is the cemetery N, the only important tomb in which is of the VIth Dynasty. On the next hill east is a cemetery of the IVth--VTth Dynasties, entirely destroyed by dealers; and beyond that the site of a prehistoric village, also entirely plundered. The cemetery A is also of the Old Kingdom, with XVIIIth Dynasty reburials, but entirely plundered, as well as the mastaba. Our huts were built here for our work of the earlier half of the season, before we moved to the fort of Diospolis. This region belongs to the village of Abadiyeh. The fine cemetery D provided a large quantity of good prehis...

A pioneering Egyptologist, Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie (1853-1942) excavated over fifty sites and trained a generation of archaeologists. His meticulous recording of artefacts and his sequence dating of pottery types found in Egypt and Palestine made Near Eastern archaeology a more rigorous and scientific discipline. This fully illustrated report of 1900 on the royal tombs at Abydos, capital of Upper Egypt, covers the first dynasty (c.3100-c.2900 BCE). Although Petrie acknowledges that it is only a preliminary report of ongoing work, he gives detailed descriptions of six tombs and the associated finds. A chapter on the inscriptions is provided by Francis Llewellyn Griffith (1862-1934). Petrie wrote prolifically throughout his long career for both specialists and non-specialists. His follow-up report, The Royal Tombs of the Earliest Dynasties (1901), and the three-part Abydos (1902-4) are among those works also reissued in this series.

It has but scarcely struggled into freedom, out of the swaddling clothes of dilettante speculations. It it still attracted by pretty things, rather than by real knowledge. It has to find shelter with the Fine Arts or with History, and not a single home has yet been provided for its real growth. All other sciences deal with the things around us ;with subjects which may, or may not, affect us. Even medical sciences are concerned with the mechanical structure of the body, rather than with the nature and abilities of the mind. But the science which enquires into all the products and works of our own species, which shows what man has been doing in all ages and under all conditions, which reveals his mind, his thoughts, his tastes, his feelings, such a science touches us more closely than any other. (A pioneering Egyptologist, Sir William Matthew Flinders P...)
A pioneering Egyptologist, Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie (1853-1942) excavated over fifty sites and trained a generation of archaeologists. In this short but classic work of 1904, he explains his vision for the young science of archaeology. Petrie outlines his processes and goals for an excavation, offering advice on how to manage workers drawn from the local population as well as guidance on creating a thorough record of a dig, the importance of which had not been fully appreciated by many contemporary archaeologists. His methods were highly influential in their more systematic and scientific approach to archaeology at a time when many of its practitioners were more focused on acquiring attractive artefacts than advancing knowledge. The text is accompanied by 66 illustrations. Petrie wrote prolifically throughout his long career, and a great many of his other publications - for both specialists and non-specialists - are also reissued in this series.

(This is a history of Ancient Egyptian and Israelite sites...)
This is a history of Ancient Egyptian and Israelite sites. From the intro: "This volume marks a new departure in the course of British excavations in Egypt. Hitherto the Egyptian Research Account has been a small resource for the promotion of the work of students ; and, as such, it has enabled several to obtain that footing in the subject from which they have gone on to more important positions. It has been for eleven years a basis for the new men who have been entering upon work in Egypt. Now it has been largely expanded, and with the support of most of the British authorities in archaeology and history, it has taken the more permanent position of the British School of Archaeology in Egypt. Such it has long been de facto ; but de facto in Egyptian affairs is not always de jure. It is well at last to adapt the name to the facts, and place this beside the schools at Athens and Rome, as the basis for British students. My best thanks personally are due to those who have helped this change with their counsel and names: to the Earl of Cromer for so cordially accepting the position of Patron of the School ; to our Treasurer, the Director of the Society of Antiquaries, for continuing his support; and to none more than to Prof. Ernest Gardner, whose long experience at the British School at Athens adds weight to his opinions. The heavy work of the organizing and correspondence, which was undertaken by my wife, has been much lightened by the kind co-operation of Dr. J. H. Walker, to whom we owe many thanks. This expansion of public interest has enabled me to continue my excavations in Egypt, and the direction of students, on a larger scale than in the past two years. The limitations of the Exploration Fund, with which I had worked, led to that basis being withdrawn, greatly to my regret ; such a break was entirely contrary to my wishes. Yet, when changes thus came about, it seemed fitting that a broader width of interests should be connected with the present position of Egyptology in England, which has developed so much in the last quarter of a century."

(A pioneering Egyptologist, Sir William Matthew Flinders P...)
A pioneering Egyptologist, Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie (1853-1942) excavated over fifty sites and trained a generation of archaeologists. This reissue brings together two of his well-illustrated excavation reports. The first, originally published in 1891, covers his 1890 dig in Palestine at Tell el-Hesi. Although he identified it incorrectly as the biblical city of Lachish, his work here was significant in Near Eastern archaeology for the stratigraphic method of excavation and use of pottery to establish chronology. The second report, from 1906, records the work carried out at a number of Hyksos and Israelite sites in Egypt, such as Tell el-Yehudiyeh and Tell er-Retabeh. It also includes chapters by John Garrow Duncan (1872-1951) on the cemeteries of Suwa and Goshen. Each report contains a section of photographs and drawings of sites, artefacts and inscriptions. Petrie wrote prolifically throughout his long career, and a great many of his other publications are also reissued in this series.

(A pioneering Egyptologist, Sir William Matthew Flinders P...)
A pioneering Egyptologist, Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie (1853-1942) excavated over fifty sites and trained a generation of archaeologists. The two excavation reports now reissued here together were written in collaboration with other experts. The first, published in 1907, describes digs at Giza and Rifeh, including the discovery of the Tomb of the Two Brothers, a well-preserved Middle Kingdom burial. The second report, co-authored with Ernest Mackay (1880-1943) and published in 1915, covers work at Heliopolis, Kafr Ammar and Shurafa. Petrie and his collaborators describe how they came to make their discoveries, shedding light on developing archaeological practices used in the early twentieth century. Each report includes a section of valuable illustrative material, such as photographs and drawings of artefacts. Petrie wrote prolifically throughout his long career, and a great many of his other publications - for both specialists and non-specialists - are also reissued in this series.

This early work by the British archaeologist, Flinders Petrie, was originally published in the early 20th century and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography. 'Athribis' is a scholarly study on ancient Egypt and archaeological findings.

(Excerpt from Personal Religion in Egypt Before Christiani...)
Excerpt from Personal Religion in Egypt Before Christianity The Personal Religion here dealt with is that which concerns private beliefs, rather than public acts, and which stands apart from Ceremonialism, and Religion as belonging to the State. The documents considered have to be viewed entire, and therefore some collateral subjects naturally come within our scope, such as creation and the nature of divinity. But yet such were anciently matters of individual belief rather than of general dogma. The material here worked over is all published already; but it had not yet received the historical study which it required to place it in its true connection. The new results which justify this restatement of the documents are: (1) the earlier dating of the Hermetic writings, which lie between 500 and 200 B.C., instead of being some centuries later as hitherto supposed. (2) The consequent tracing out of a gradual development of beliefs and terms which place the documents in their relative order of growth. (3) The historical precision of the life of Apollonios, as an evidence of its genuineness. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.

A pioneering Egyptologist, Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie (1853-1942) excavated over fifty sites and trained a generation of archaeologists. This single-volume reissue brings together three well-illustrated reports of his excavations over three seasons at Memphis and Meidum on the west bank of the Nile, first published in 1909-10. Work at Memphis in 1908 and 1909 notably focused on the west hall of the temple of Ptah and the royal palace of Apries. Chapters on the inscriptions are provided by James Herbert Walker (d.1914). The excavations at Meidum continued those begun in 1891 and recorded in the 1892 report that is also reissued in this series. Petrie was assisted by Ernest Mackay (1880-1943) and Gerald Averay Wainwright (1879-1964) in working on the pyramid, built for the fourth-dynasty pharaoh Sneferu, and the mastaba of Nefermaat, one of the largest private tombs of the Old Kingdom.

Not illustrated. 1888 Excerpt: ...successively bring him later down in history. Hence this result falls well amongst the various reckonings; the nearest to it being that of Mariette, about two centuries earlier, and of Brugsch (by genealogies); about as much later. Even if any one may raise an objection to this treatment of the passage, yet one result is certain, that Epiphi could not have come for four months earlier in the season, as then there would have been plenty of water; hence it is equally impossible for the date of Pepi to be put anywhere between 3400 and 2900 B.C. But from all the facts--the known habit of transporting stone during high Nile (both from the Greek inscriptions and that of Una)--the special mention of the haste with which the block was cut--and yet the water being insufficient to float it to the base of the hills when it arrived--I think it may be granted that we have here a firmer basis than those yet proposed for the date of the Vlth dynasty. This stands solely on a seasonal fact, and not on any uncertain festivals which may have been changed, and whose identity has been so much disputed. 30. One other datum exists which ought to be examined. The Sothis period of 1460 years falls 139 A.D., 1322 B.C., 2782 B.C., 4242 B.C., 5702 B.C., &c. But as the actual cycle astronomically is of 1508 years, it follows that Sirius cannot have actually risen heliacally on the ist day of Thoth (New Year's day), on more than one of these epochs; all the others are dead-reckonings by the incorrect cycle of 1460, or 4 x 365 years, from some actual observation. On which of these epochs, then, was that fundamental observation made which started the calendar? This is not a case where the knowledge of an ancient people may carry us back into a fictitious past, but where the ignorance ...

The tribe was fairly homogeneous, containing equal numbers of similar men and women, and was not addicted to fighting. Nor will the presence of even a tribe of foreign mercenaries account for the remains. Any soldier employed by Egyptians must have had some contact with them, have used some Egyptian objects or weapons, and probably have been recompensed by some Egyptian products. Yet not any Egyptian things, of any kind whatever, were found among these people, nor even the simplest Egyptian arts, such as the potter's wheel; they had no intercourse with the former inhabitants, but were entirely independent. CHAPTER IX. DESCRIPTION OF PLATES. By Messrs. Petrie and Quibell. 56. PL. I. Ballas to Naqada.--This map will shew the general relation of the places. The belt of cultivation varies from 1 miles wide at Ballas to 3 miles opposite Nubt; while the desert plain back to the cliffs averages about 3 miles in width. This desert rises in a low terrace to a plateau about 30 feet above the Nile plain, and then gradually slopes upward until it is broken into a maze of foot hills at about 2 miles back. High above these rise the cliffs to 1400 feet, in many parts quite inaccessible, with ranges of precipices some hundreds of feet high. These cliffs form the river front to the great Libyan plateau, which is intersected with stream-courses and valleys. The valleys run down westward in the plateau, and open out in the Nile valley far to the north, while the valley-heads reach up to the cliffface, and often break the outline of that with dips and slopes. The plain below the cliffs is intersected with drainage ...

Neither spirit nor benzol would clean it; but a strong soap lather rubbed hard upon it disclosed gradually the signs here shown. The medium of the inks, both red and black, was so firm that nothing was lost from the signs. This is one of the most valuable pieces recovered, as it shows the free-hand drawing of signs at the finest period of the early kingdom. The firmness and regularity of the lines and the free sweep of the handling are unsurpassed in any writing. It might have been attached to the statuette just noticed, as it seems to name "the standing image of the ka of king Zer of the palace Qed hotep." The name of the palace is the same as that of king Merpaba (R.T. i. vi. 8). The form of the sign ha explains the meaning of the small enclosure in the corner; that is not an inner chamber as generally supposed, but it is the fortified gateway, as in the Shuuet ex Zebib at Abydos, and elsewhere. This was suggested by Maspero in J'roc. Soc. Bib. Arch. xii. 247. 4. This early work by the British archaeologist, Flinders Petrie, was originally published in 1890 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography. 'Kahun, Gurob, and Hawara' is a detailed scholarly work on the findings of an archaeological dig in Egypt.

This present handbook is intended to aid in the understanding of Egyptian art, and the illustrations and descriptions are selected for that purpose only. The history of the art would require a far greater range of examples, in order to illustrate the growth and decay of each of the great periods ;whereas here only the most striking works of each period are shown, in order to contrast the different civilisations. The origins and connections of the art in each age are scarcely touched, and the technical details are only such as are needed to see the conditions of the art. The archaeology of the subject would need as wide a treatment as the history, and these subjects can only appear here incidentally. It should be noticed that the divisions of artistic periods are often not the same as those of political history. (Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.) (A pioneering Egyptologist, Sir William Matthew Flinders P...)

(Although some of Egypt's most important archaeological fi...)
Although some of Egypt's most important archaeological finds were made in the late nineteenth century, at a time when historical fiction was popular, the literature of Egypt had reached very few English readers. Aiming to bring ancient Egypt to life in the public imagination, eminent archaeologist W. M. Flinders Petrie (1853-1942) published in 1895 this two-volume collection of original stories, accompanied by illustrations and helpful contextualising comments. The four tales of Volume 2 are set in the period from the reign of Thutmose III during the eighteenth dynasty to the time of Setna, a son of Ramesses II of the nineteenth dynasty. Shedding light on contemporary life and literature, the stories represent a valuable resource for Egyptologists and folklorists. Petrie's rendering of the stories into English, based on translations of various papyri, remains accessible to all. Many more of his works, for both specialists and non-specialists, are also reissued in this series.

(This book was originally published prior to 1923, and rep...)

(It seems that any simple form of fiction is supposed to b...)
It seems that any simple form of fiction is supposed to be a "fairy tale:" which implies that it has to do with an impossible world of imaginary beings. Now the Egyptian Tales are exactly the opposite of this, they relate the doings and the thoughts of men and women who are human--sometimes "very human". Whatever there is of supernatural elements is a very part of the beliefs and motives of the people whose lives are here pictured. But most of what is here might happen in some corner of our own country to-day, where ancient beliefs may have a home. It is strange that while literature occupies so much attention as at present, and while fiction is the largest division of our book-work, the oldest literature and fiction of the world should yet have remained unpresented to English readers. But research moves forward ; and translations that were excellent twenty years ago may now be largely improved, as we attain more insight into the language. For another reason also there is a wide ground for the present volume. In no case have any illustrations been attempted, to give that basis for imagination which is all the more needed when reading of an age and a land unfamiliar to our ideas. When following a narrative, whether of real events or of fiction, many persons--perhaps most--find themselves unconsciously framing in their minds the scenery and the beings of which they are reading. It will be noticed how the growth of the novel is shadowed out in the varied grounds and treatment of the tales. The earliest is purely a collection of marvels or fabulous incidents of the simplest kind. Then we advance to contrasts between town and country, between Egypt and foreign lands. Then personal adventure, and the interest in schemes and successes, becomes the staple material; while only in the later periods does character come in as the groundwork.

This early work by the British archaeologist, Flinders Petrie, was originally published in 1910 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography. 'The Growth of the Gospels as Shewn by Structural Criticism' is a detailed scholarly work on the construction of the New Testament.

(The Gospels and the Logia. The fundamental question of th...)
The Gospels and the Logia. The fundamental question of the relation of the Gospels to each other must precede any exact understanding of their teaching. Until some means of discrimination are gained, it is impossible to decide which of the slightly varying accounts should be accepted as the more correct, or which sayings or episodes may be the more precisely recorded. It is evident that the means of judging of these matters lie before us, in a triple account, which varies in its detail and its order. But what conclusions are to be drawn from these variations is greatly debated. (Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.) (During the age of the decline of Egyptian power in Syria,...)
During the age of the decline of Egyptian power in Syria, when the great conquests of Tahutmes I. were all gradually lost, a splendid store of information was laid by for us in the cuneiform correspondence at Tell el A marna. The clay tablets, mostly from Syria, but with a few duplicates of letters from Egypt, were deposited in The place of the records of the palace of the king, as it is called upon the stamped bricks which I found still remaining there, A few years ago the natives, while plundering about the ruins and carrying off Akhenaten sbricks for their modern houses, lit upon this record chamber containing many hundreds of tablets.
