In 1913 he graduated from Fishery Research Institute.
After graduating from Fishery Research Institute he was appointed assistant professor at Tokyo University and shortly after was sent to Europe and America for further studies. Upon return he was appointed professor at Tokyo Higher Normal School, then Deputy Director of the Resources Science Research Institute, then chief of the Fishery Research Institute to eventually become Dean of Faculty of Fishing of Mie University (1950).
Among his numerous works are "Fish in Japan: Illustrated," "Evolutionary Forms of Reptiles" and "Nature of the Great Coral Reef."
