Yakov Markovich studied at the acting department of the Lunacharsky State Institute for Theatre Arts (now Russian Academy of Theatre Arts)(1940-1941), graduated from the directing department of the Leningrad N.K. Cherkasov State Institute of Theater, Music and Cinematography (now Russian State Institute of Performing Arts) (1952). He worked in the theaters of Perm, Ryazan and Pskov. In the years 1959-1966 was director of the Kuibyshev Drama Theater.
Among the main stage productions are: "The Sword of Damocles", Nazim Hikmet, "Wolves and Sheep" Alexander Ostrovsky, "Scorched Life" Callegari, "Before the Dinner" Viktor Rozov, "The Death of Ivan the Terrible" Alexey Tolstoy and others.
Since 1968 was the main director of the Omsk Drama Theater, where he staged the following performances: "Cyrano de Bergerac" Edmond Rostand (1969), "Soldier’s Widow" Nikolai Ankilov (1972), "Crime and Punishment" after Fyodor Dostoevsky (Kirzhner’s stage version, 1974), "Energetic People" by Vasily Shukshin (1974), "Three Sisters" Anton Chekhov (1975) and others.
Yakov Markovich Kirzhner had been in Voronezh many times. He taught in the studio at the Kuibyshev Drama Theater.
