He graduated from Tokyo University in 1907.
He was appointed professor of Tokyo University in 1918 and thence until retirement (1939) remained in same post for over 20 years during which time he came to serve also as head of Tokyo University's Fuel Research Institute. During these years he achieved much in researches on coal liquefaction and received degree of Doctor of Engineering in 1919. After retiring from Tokyo University was appointed president of Korea Synthetic Petroleum Company (1942).
