Residing at Seiada in Nitta District, Kozuke Province (Gumma Prefecture), Yoshishige Nitta was called Nitta Taro or Nitta Kaja. In the Hogen Era (1156-1158), he became assistant bailiff of the Nitta Manor of the Kujoin family in Kyoto. Afterward he became a Buddhist priest and called himself Josai.
After Yoritomo became powerful, he proceeded to Kamakura and offered to support him. Yoritomo however, still indignant over Yoshihige's failure to follow him at the start of his campaign, refused to see him. Although he was later forgiven by Yoritomo Yoshishige was never made much of by Yoritomo. He offended Yoritomo again by marrying his daughter to a man who was not chosen by the Shogun.
