Zekai Sen was born on October 25, 1947 in Kastamenu, Turkey, in the family of Zekeriya and Hatice Sen.

In 1971, Zekai graduated from Istanbul Technical University, Faculty of Civil Engineering as a Senior Engineer in Reinforced Concrete. In 1972, he received a degree from the Imperial College of Science and Technology from the UK where he went with a NATO scholarship, the Diploma of Imperial College and Master of Science. In 1974 he earned a Doctorate of Philosophy degree at the University of London.
Between 1975 and 1982, Zekai worked as an associate professor in the Department of Hydraulics and Water Forces, Faculty of Civil Engineering, Istanbul Technical University, in 1979. Between 1982-1992 he worked as president and lecturer in the Department of Hydrogeology at King Abdulaziz University, Faculty of Earth Sciences, Saudi Arabia. Since 1992 Zekai is a professor of meteorology at Istanbul Technical University.
On January 1, 1952, Zekai narried Fatma Ozturk, with whom he has three children: Zekeriya, Tevhide, and Fatih Mehmet.
