Zennosuke Tsuji was born in 1877 in Hyōgo Prefecture, Japan.
After graduating from Tokyo University (1899), Zennosuke Tsuji continued research in Japanese history and was conferred a doctorate (1909), after which he proceeded to Europe and America for further studies.
Returning home was appointed professor at Tokyo University (1923). His research on Japanese Buddhism was awarded an Academy prize. Was a member of the Academy, of National Treasures Preservation Committee and head of the Historical Material Compiling Institute.
