Zenryu Tsukamoto was born in 1898, in Nagoya, Japan.
Zenryu Tsukamoto graduated from the Kyoto University in 1926. While still a student, he studied the history of Buddhism in China, particularly of the Tang Dynasty, under Dr. Toru Haneda, and since 1928 made six visits to China for further study and research.
Zenryu Tsukamoto was accepted member of Cultural Study Institute for Far East in 1929, and later, in 1948, assistant professor at his alma mater. He was also chief priest of Seiryoji Temple, Saga. Among his works are "Jodo Sect During the Middle Period of Tang Dynasty," "Studies of Buddhist History in China" and "Studies of Sino-Japanese Buddhist Relations."
