Gien was born in Japan. Gien was the son of Yoshitomo Minamoto and the elder brother to Yoshitsune. His early name was Otowaka. After he entered priesthood he called himself Ensai.

Gien served En-e who was a priest prince. He later changed his name to Gien. When Yoritomo Minamoto revolted against the Taira family, Gien followed him with his uncle Yukiie Minamoto, and fought the Taira forces on the River Sumata in Owari (Aichi Prefecture).
In 1181, Gien was killed in that battle when he was wading the river alone on horseback at night.
