His first master was his adopted father Takamasa Nonoguchi and when he returned to his original domicile he continued his studies under Nobutomo Ban.
He died in Kyoto while actively participating in the movement for the expulson of foreigners and reverence for the Emperor.
Shortly after he founded his own private school which he left to become professor of the boarding school of his clan. When western influence began trickling into the country he advocated the necessity of building up a modern navy in the course of which he built two vessels known as Hayatori and Jingo.
