Career
He was the first biology instructor at Manchester University in Indiana, joining the faculty in 1894, and also the University of Southern California’s first marine biologist, hired in 1901. He ultimately became the Director of the Marine Biological Station of the University of Southern California. The Hyphessobrycon ulreyi is named after him.
