He graduated from Voronezh gymnasium (1854), Imperial Law School (Saint Petersburg, 1858).
Alexander Aleksandrovich was an official of the Ministry of Justice (since 1878), senator (1878), member of the State Council (1901). He participated in the preparation of peasant (1861) and judicial (1864) reforms, the development of the Civil Code, Bill and Land Charter. He was a founder and active member (1879) of the Law Society at Saint Petersburg University.
Alexander authored "Sistematicheskie sborniki resheniy Grazhdanskogo kassacionnogo departamenta Senata" of 1873, 1874, 1876 (Saint Petersburg, 1875, 1876, 1878; in association with others). He published lectures on Baltic law (Saint Petersburg, 1889; with R. B. Dorn), "O novom proekte ustava o vekselyah" book (Saint Petersburg, 1895). He translated the legal writings of T. Macolay (1858), I. Bentam (1860), "Obshchegermansky vekselny ustav" (1879).
