Education
Serafim graduated from Oryol Theological Divinity School in 1833 and Kiev Theological Academy in 1837.
Career
Serafim worked as a lecturer at Kiev Theological Academy from 1837 to 1842 and assistant of the librarian there from 1838 to 1842. He was an inspector and professor of theology of Kazan Theological Academy from 1842 to 1846. Serafim was the rector of the newly established the Caucasus Theological Divinity School in Stavropol from 1846 to 1850, Mogilev Theological Divinity School from 1850 to 1852, Kherson Theological Divinity School from 1852 to 1858, Tambov Theological Divinity School from 1858 to 1859. From 1859 to 1865, he was the Bishop of Chyhyryn, Vicar of the Diocese of Kiev from 1859 to 1865. He was the Bishop (from 1865) and Archbishop (from 1871) of Voronezh and Zadonsk.
The Diocesan Women's School was opened in Voronezh in 1865, publishing of Voronezh Diocesan Vedomosti newspaper began in 1866, public theological readings were organized in 1872, building of the Theological School was constructed in 1882 and a brotherhood was established in the name of St. Metrophan and Tikhon Zadonsky in 1885 under Seraphim’s patronage. Serafim was a fan of church singing. He patronized the bishop's choir which achieved all-Russian fame during his life.
