In 1950 was graduated from the secondary school of the Nesterov district of the Kaliningrad region. In 1950 entered the Moscow Geological Prospecting Institute named after Sergo Ordzhonikidze for the faculty of aerial photography, but did not score the required number of points. Agreed on the offer to transfer to the Penza Industrial Institute. In 1955 he was graduated from the Penza Industrial Institute with a degree in "precision mechanics". On August 28, 1968 he was graduated from the Kolomna flying club at the rate of the pilot-sportsman on the aircraft Yak-18.

On August 18, 1967, by order of the Chief Designer of the Central Design Bureau, V.P. Mishin, was included in the group of candidates for cosmonauts of the Central Design Bureau for the H1-L3 program. From August 1967 to 1969 he had been training in the Central Design Bureau of Spacecraft as part of a group of cosmonauts under the H1-L3 program.
He passed a medical examination at the Institute of Medical and Biological Problems (IBMP) and on November 30, 1967 received the opinion of the Main Medical Commission (MMC) about fitness for special training. On May 27, 1968, at the meeting of the State Interdepartmental Commission (SIDC), he was recommended for enlistment in the cosmonaut detachment.

From May 1969 to June 1970, he had been trained in the "Contact" program (testing the docking system for lunar ships in near-earth orbit) as a flight engineer of the crew of the active "Soyuz" spacecraft No.18, together with L. Vorobyev, and then with P. Klimuk.
From June 1970 to March 16, 1971 he had been trained as a test engineer of the third (backup) crew of the "Soyuz-10" spacecraft on the DOS-1 flight program "Salyut", together with V.Shatalov and V.Volkov, and from February 12, 1971 - together with G. Dobrovolsky and V. Volkov.
From April 27 to May 27, 1971, he had been trained as a test engineer of the second (backup) crew of the "Soyuz-11" spacecraft under the DOS-1 flight program "Salyut", together with G. Dobrovolsky and V.Volkov. At the meeting of the State Commission held on June 4, 1971, the main crew of the "Soyuz-11" (A.Leonov, V.Kubasov and P.Kolodin) was suspended from the flight because of the spot detected by the doctors in V.Kubasov's lung. The crew of G. Dobrovolsky was the main of the "Soyuz-11".
June 6 - 29, 1971, as a research engineer at the "Soyuz-11" spacecraft and the first main expedition (EO-1) at DOS-1 "Salyut", together with Dobrovolsky G. and Volkov V. Call sign: "Jantar'-3". During the crew's return to Earth (June 30), the "Soyuz-11" descent vehicle was depressurized (a ventilating vent valve blew open prematurely), and the astronauts died.
