In 1973 - graduated from secondary school No. 5 in Jurmala, from 1973 to 1979 - he studied at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT), in the specialty of "Flight Dynamics and Management". In 1983 - graduated in absentia from the post-graduate course of MIPT on the specialty of "Mechanics of liquids, gas and plasma". From April 1987 to May 1991 - was training for a space flight as a flight engineer and duplicated the crews of the Soyuz TM spacecraft under the programs EO-3, EO-8, EO-9 on the Mir space station.
From May to July 1991 – was training as a flight engineer for the main crew of the ship "Soyuz TM-13" under the program EO-10 / Austromir on the OK "Mir".
From October 1991 to March 1992 - was training for a space flight as a flight engineer of the main crew of the Soyuz TM-14 TPK under the EO-11 / Mir-92 program at Mir.
From September 1995 to August 1996 - was training as a flight engineer of the backup crew of the Soyuz TM-24 TPK under the EO-22 / NASA-3 program at Mir International Airport.
From December 1997 to July 1998 - was training in the EO-26 program for the OK "Mir" as a flight engineer of the backup crew.from March 1999 to March 2000 - was training as a flight engineer of the main crew of EO-28 to OK "Mir".
From January 2001 to May 2002 - was training for a space flight as a commander of the backup crew of ISS-5.
In the period from September 2002 to February 2003 - was preparing for a space flight as a flight engineer of the ISS-7 main crew for launch at Shuttle OK.
In the period from February to April 2003 - was preparing for a space flight in the backup crew of the ISS-7 as commander of the Soyuz TMA and the ISS flight engineer. From June to October 2003 - was training for a space flight in the main ISS-8 crew as the commander of the Soyuz TMA-3 TPK and the ISS flight engineer.
From June 1, 2009 - was preparing for a space flight in the ISS-25/26 main crew as the commander of the Soyuz TMA-M and the ISS flight engineer.
From September 1979 to April 1984 - worked in the NPO “Energy” named after S.P. Korolev in a position of an engineer.
In February 1984 – by a decision of the State interdepartmental commission he was selected for the cosmonaut detachment of the NGO “Energy”.
April 13, 1984 – was appointed to the post of candidate for cosmonauts-testers of the cosmonaut corps of the NGO "Energy".
Kaleri is married to the former Svetlana L. Nosova. They have a son, Oleg Aleksandrovich Kaleri, born in 1996. Kaleri's mother, Antonina Petrovna Kaleri, resides in Sevastopol, Crimea, and his father, Yuri Borisovich Kaleri, is deceased.
