In 1977 he graduated from high school in Chelyabinsk.
From May 1978 to May 1980, he served in the airborne troops of the Soviet Army. From 1980 to 1986 he worked in the internal affairs bodies of Moscow. In 1986, moved to work in the design bureau of general engineering, where he worked until 1991 as a test engineer. From 1991 to 1995 he worked for non-state enterprises in Moscow. In April 1995, he was appointed to the position of engineer at RSC Energia. His duties included resolving issues related to issuing instructions, programs and technical documentation for testing and training cosmonauts for extra-flying activities.
In January 1998 he was enrolled in the cosmonaut detachment of the RSC Energia. From March 1998 to November 1999 he passed the course of general space training. In December 1999 he was awarded the qualification of "test cosmonaut" of the cosmonaut corps RSC Energia.
From August 2001 to February 2003 he was trained under the ISS flight engineer program and the commander of the Soyuz TM TPK of the backup crew of the ISS-8 for launch at Shuttle OK. In connection with the tragedy of the Columbia shuttle, the ISS-8 crew was re-formed, and M.B. Kornienko was disqualified.
From March 2003 to August 2005 he was trained as a member of the cosmonauts group on the ISS program. From September 2005 to January 2006, he was trained in the international group for flights to the ISS.
since February 2006 he was trained as a backup crew of the ISS-15 as a flight engineer of the Soyuz TMA and the ISS flight engineer.
From March 2007 to August 2008 he was trained in the ISS group. From August 2008 to April 2010 he was trained with a flight crew of ISS-23/24 as a flight engineer of the Soyuz TMA and ISS flight engineer. From April 2013 to September 2014 was trained as a backup crew member of ISS-41/42 and as a flight engineer of the Soyuz TMA-M and ISS.From September 2014 to March 2015 he was trained as a part of the main crew performing an annual space flight as a flight engineer of the Soyuz TMA-M and the ISS-43/44/45/46 flight engineer.
From April 02, 2010 to September 25, 2010 Mikhail Kornienko was working as a flight engineer of the Soyuz TMA-18 and ISS-23 together with cosmonaut A. Skvortsov (Russia) and astronaut Tracy Caldwell Dyson (USA). During the flight, he performed a spacewalk with duration of 6 hours 43 minutes. Flight duration: 176 days 01 hour and 18 minutes. Callsign: "Cliff".
On March 27, 2015 he became a flight engineer of the Soyuz TMA-16M. He had been working at the International Space Station for about a year as a flight engineer of the ISS-43/44/45/46. Landed on the TPK Soyuz TMA-18M on March 2, 2016. During the annual expedition he performed one spacewalk, the duration of which was 5 hours and 34 minutes. During the flight, the cosmonaut performed work with ships such as Progress М-М, Progress МS, transport manned ships. During the activity on board the ISS, he conducted a lot of scientific and applied researches and experiments , did the repair and restoration work of on-board systems, performed on-board photo and video shooting, and took part in the preparation of the Soyuz TMA-18M spacecraft for returning from orbit.
