In 1972 Anatolij Pogorelov graduated from the Gnessin State Musical College (former The Gnessin State Music Pedagogical Institute). He did his postgraduate studies there in the class of Associate Professor L.E. Brumberg.
Since 1975 Anatolij Pogorelov has been working at the Voronezh State Academy of Arts, since 1986 he was the head of the piano playing specialty department there. At the same time, he worked as a teacher at the Voronezh Secondary Special Music School and Voronezh College of Music. In 2004-2005 Anatolij Pogorelov was a lecturer at the Catholic University of Daegu.
There are laureates and diploma winners of international and All-Russian competitions among his students: B. Levchenko, Y.Lytkina, A. Kalenikin, D. Braslavskaya, A. Selivanova, J. Lysak and others.
Anatolij Pogorelov took part in international festivals. He has performed solo and chamber concerts in Russia, Bulgaria, Germany, France, Switzerland. He wrote: "Songs without Words" by Mendelssohn: aspects of style and work on cantilena"; "Rachmaninov: 10 preludes op. 23. Performing tips (from the teaching experience)"; "S.V. Rachmaninov in the context of world music culture".
