Swift received a BA in Photography (1975) from the University of Connecticut in Storrs. He continued his photography studies at the Rhode Island School of Design, receiving an MFA in 1979.
Since 1979 Swift has been self-employed, producing handmade photographic paper. In 1980 he also was an adviser in photography at the College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor, Maine. He was the head of photographic services at the Biology Department of the University of Connecticut from 1976 to 1978. The commission awarded him a grant in 1975 to create and coordinate a visual learning program for low-income-family children in Putnam, Connecticut.
