Began the study of Persian in early youth. First assisted by Jules Mohl, and afterwards by North. de KhanikofF, South. Guyard, and Professor Palmer. From natives of Persia acquired a thorough knowledge of the colloquial.
Afterwards read Arabic with Doctorates
Percy Badger, Sabunjie, Tien, and natives of Syria, from whom he also acquired the colloquial Syrian Arabic. His travels later on in Egypt enabled him to compare the dialect of that country with the Syrian.
At a later period he travelled in Morocco, and had his first experience of tent and caravansarai life in a journey to Fez. He has also made a considerable study of Turkish, and some study of Hindustani.
He has served on the Council of the Royal Asiatic Society, and was for five years University Teacher of Persian at Cambridge.
Graduated at the University of London, passing in Arabic in one of the examinations, 1887. Professor of Persian at University College, London.
