Ching-lun Li educated in public schools of New York City, New York University and the University of Chicago. Then he returned to China in 1906 and engaged in educational work and studied Chinese untill 1911.
Ching-lun Li was a Division head in the Bureau of Foreign Affairs at Canton, China in 1911-1913, exiled with other Kuomintang members in 1914-917, secretary to Dr.Sun Yat-sen in 1917, chief of the political department in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Military Government) at Canton, China in 1918-1920, Comissioner of Foreign Affairs and concurrently Superintendent of Customs in 1920-1922.
He was also a professor of political science and history at Shanghai College in 1922-1927, chief of the political department in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the National Government in the United States in 1927, councillor in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1928, delegate from China to the permanent Court of Arbitration in 1928, Minister to Mexico in November in 1928, Political Vice-minister and later acting Minister in 1929-1931 and Minister to Poland and Czechoslovakia since 1933.
