Cyrus Elder, American lawyer, author. Member commission to revise tax laws of Pennsylvania.


Elder, Cyrus was born on June 16, 1833 in Somerset, Pennsylvania, United States. Son of Clifford and Rosanna (Benford) Elder.


Ed public and private schools, Utica, O., and Forensic and Literature Circle, Philadelphia.


Admitted to bar, 1856. Served as First lieutenant and a.-q.-m. 10th Pennsylvania Reserve Volunteer Corps, 1861-1862.

Settled in law practice at Johnstown, 1863. Solicitor and general agent Cambria Iron (now Steel) Company, until 1901, when retired from business. Organized Bessemer Steel Limited company.

Organized, and was solicitor Johnstown Savings Bank, Cambria (Pennsylvania) Mutual Benefit Association. Organized, and was president Cambria Public Library, Union Benevolent Association, Johnstown. Was secretary Johnstown Flood Finance Committee Was secretary Industrial League, and editor of its bulletin.

Editor Farmers’ and Mechanics’ Almanak (protectionist).
