He studied for an MFA in Photography at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. He received his BA in Visual Communications at Wilmington College (1972) and studied and worked with Michael A. Smith in 1971.
Since 1977 Allison has taught photography at both Northern Virginia Community College and in the Smithsonian Institute's Resident Arts Program. He was a staff photographer for Staples & Charles Design Offices, 1975-78 and, in 1972, was editor of the Wilmingtonian.
George Washington University awarded Fellowships in Photography to Allison in both 1978 and 1979.
The artist works exclusively with an 8x10 view camera. His previous work concentrated on landscapes, abstractions and nudes, while more recent work deals with cityscapes and people.
