He obtained a Bachelor of Science Jones emigrated to Canada and joined Dalhousie"s Department of Dentistry in the Biomaterials Science Division in 1975, serving as Head of the Division and as Associate Dean of Research during his tenure. Jones conducts research into biomaterials and materials, including ceramics, hard and soft polymers, composites, dental cement, bone cement, mercury pollution, biocompatibility of materials and synthesis of glass and polymer materials, as well as the release of drugs from biomaterials. He has authored and co-authored over 300 papers and abstracts and contributed chapters and sections on biomaterials in eight books, and his research has resulted in two patents.
He has contributed to dental materials standardization, both in Canada and internationally, since 1971, and as International Chair of the International Organization for Standardization TC 106 for six years.
In 2015 Jones serves as Chair of the International Organization for Standardization (International Organization for Standardization)) Technical Committee 106 - Dentistry. His area of expertise is dental materials.
He is a Chartered Chemist (C Chem) and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemists (FRSC), the Institute of Ceramics (FICeram), Institute of Materials (FIM) and Biomaterials Science and Engineering (FBSE). Jones is a past president of the Canadian Association for Dental Research, the International Dental Materials Group, and International Association for Dental Research, and served as Chair of the Canadian Dental Association Dental Materials and Devices Committee, the Canadian Dental Association Technical Committee on Dentistry and the Canadian Advisory Committee to the International Organization for Standardization.
