Furuichi Kimitake was born in 1854.
Formerly a retainer of the Himeji Clan (Hyogo Prefecture), Furuichi Kimitake studied at the Daigaku Nanko, the predecessor of Tokyo University. Went to Paris (1875) to study engineering at the University of Paris. Obtained his doctorate (1888) having been the first person to receive the degree of Doctor of Engineering.
Furuichi Kimitake returned to Japan (1880) and joined the Home Ministry staff and later was appointed professor at Tokyo University and then dean of its Engineering Department. In 1890, became Chief of the Engineering Bureau, Home Ministry, and directed the nation’s riparian works.
Among the public engineering works directed by him are that on the embankment of the Shinano River and construction of Yokohama harbor. Was appointed Vice-Minister of Communications (1898). Contributed to the excavation of the Sasa-go Railway Tunnel on the Chuo Line, which was a difficult project. Doyen of the Japanese civil engineering world, he supervised railway and other engineering works in Korea around the time of the Russo-Japanese War (1904-5).
Was a member of the House of Peers.
