Background

Gendo V Kiyokawa was born in Edo (now Tokyo). Belonging to a family who for generations had been dealing in medicine.

Career

Gendo V Kiyokawa succeeded to the name of Gendo, though he called himself Shoken. He practiced medicine at Nihonbashi, Edo (1862), and after the Meiji Restoration (1868) when Western medicine began Rettinj popular, he persisted in the old Chinese method of treatment.

Personality

Gendo V Kiyokawa was resolute by nature, though obstinate. A heavy drinker, he was always in debt.
