Hirotaka Terazawa was born in 1562 in Owari (Aichi Prefecture), son of Etchu-no-kami Iliromasa, a retainer of Nobunaga Oda and earlier known as Chiijiro.
Terazawa Hirotaka went into the service of Hideyoshi Toyotomi.
Hirotaka Terazawa showed his merits and was appointed Castellan of Karatsu, Hizen Province (Saga Prefecture) and distinguished himself during the conquest of Korea.
Later served Ieyasu Tokugawa, and for his gallantry during the Sekigahara Battle (1600) was rewarded with a fief of 120,000 koku of rice. Again showed his mettle during the Osaka Fuyu-no-Jin (civil war between Toyotomi and Tokugawa in 1614).
Hirotaka Terazawa was of stern character, and abided by the codes of a samurai and often sat down with his men to partake of their coarse food. Was also a good administrator and among his retainers were some of the most distinguished soldiers of the era.
