Professor of Classics, University of N.B., 1872-1879. Entered Politics, 1882, and represented Kings, N.B., 1882-1896. Ran for York, 1896, and sat for that constituency until 1900.
Contested City of St. John, N.B., 1900, and North Ontario in 1902. Became Minister of Marine in Sir John A. Macdonald’s government, 1885. Finance Minister, 1888, in same ministry, and since under Sir John Abbott, Sir John Thompson Sir Mackenzie Bo well, and Sir Charles Tupper.
Is Liberal Conservative in politics, an Imperialist, and a United Empire Preferential Trade advocate. A strong supporter of adequate protection for Canadian industries, the development of Canada by railway and steamship facilities.
