He was a master of that art in the time Higashiyama Dono (Shogun Yoshimasa Ashikaga). Yoshimasa liked lacquer-ware and patronized Shinsai. His works were treasured, especially those which belonged to the Shoguis palace, because of the excellent pictures executed on them with gold dust. He is regarded as the professional ancestor of all Japanese lacquer artists.
