Ivan graduated from the railway school № 1 in Voronezh. In 1943 Ivan graduated from the Leningrad Military Engineering Academy, in 1950 he ended the Higher Engineering Technical College.
Ivan was a commander of the pontoon platoon at the 135th separate motorized pontoon-and-bridge battalion (6th pontoon-bridge brigade, Voronezh Front). He distinguished himself in the October of 1943. During 4 days under enemy fire Ivan transported personnel and military equipment on the ferry-boat over the Dnieper River to the Bukrin bridgehead. After the Great Patriotic War colonel Dmitriev worked in the Saint Petersburg Military Engineering-Technical University. Since 1985 he was retired and lived in St. Petersburg.
