Since 1954, Ivan Stepanovich was an associate professor, head of the Russian language department of the Oryol State Pedagogical Institute. He was a professor of the department of Russian-Slavic Linguistics (since 1976), dean of the Faculty of Philology (1976-1984) of Voronezh State University.
