Studied at Brighton College. Apprenticed to Messrs. Fairbairn and Company, engineers.
Subsequently at St. John’s College Cambridge. Master of Arts Cambridge 1866.
Lecturer (1866) and Vice-Principal (1870) of the former Royal School of Naval Architecture, South Kensington. Professor of Applied Mechanics at Royal Naval College Greenwich, 1873. Retired September 1897.
Fellow of the Royal Society 1878. Club: Savile.
