Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

("Three centuries and a half have passed since the burning...)
"Three centuries and a half have passed since the burning of George Wishart, the event which has made the name of Cardinal Beaton the name most execrated in the ecclesiastical history of Scotland." The subsequent murder of Cardinal David Beaton in St. Andrews Castle, (May 29, 1546) was the signal event igniting the Protestant Reformation in Scotland. Though Cardinal Beaton has been for the most part associated with the persecution of heretics, (George Wishart most notably) Author John Herkless provides a more complete portrait of the man in all his strengths and weaknesses. Though not a Catholic himself, the author maintains throughout, a disciplined objectivity, enabling him to provide such assessments: "The moralist who dwells on the vice of the clergy, which was a cause of the downfall of the Catholic Church, will do well to look at the perfidy of the men who were ranged on the side of the reformed religion." "But patriotism was all but dead among the nobles of Scotland, and was to be found chiefly among the church men; and the man who was the most zealous upholder of the ancient faith was also the most ardent champion of his country's independence." A well written and researched book from the late 19th century, this work should form a part of every Reformation historian's library. Author John Herkless held the post of Professor of Ecclesiastical History at the University of St. Andrews. Footnoted with active Table of Contents.

Leopold Classic Library is delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive collection. As part of our on-going commitment to delivering value to the reader, we have also provided you with a link to a website, where you may download a digital version of this work for free. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. Whilst the books in this collection have not been hand curated, an aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature. As a result of this book being first published many decades ago, it may have occasional imperfections. These imperfections may include poor picture quality, blurred or missing text. While some of these imperfections may have appeared in the original work, others may have resulted from the scanning process that has been applied. However, our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. While some publishers have applied optical character recognition (OCR), this approach has its own drawbacks, which include formatting errors, misspelt words, or the presence of inappropriate characters. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with an experience that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic book, and that the occasional imperfection that it might contain will not detract from the experience.

(Excerpt from The World's Epoch-Makers: Francis and Domini...)
Excerpt from The World's Epoch-Makers: Francis and Dominic and the Mendicant Orders Medievalism is a record of spiritual, mental, and political slavery; but it is also the fascinating story of the Church's supremacy, of the Crusades with their forlorn hopes and splendid legends, of the piety which raised the Gothic cathedrals, of the universities with their weight of learning, of the friars poor for Christ's sake, of the scholastics justifying the dogma, of the mystics blessed with the vision of God. One of the charms of Medievalism is that the stage is vast; the chief actors are of epic stature. The emperor, Otto the Great or Frederick Barbarossa, was pre-eminent among the kings of the Western world: the pope, Gregory VII. or Innocent III., was not a prisoner of his palace, but was a rival for the sovereign place in Europe. Around the emperor was the majesty of Rome, while the pope was vested with the sanctity of religion. The centuries, however, were furnishing the Roman pontiff with temporal splendour.
