Jun-ichiro Matsumoto was born in 1893 in Chiba, Japan.
Graduated from Tokyo University in 1918.
After graduating from Tokyo University he joined the editorial staff of "Osaka Mainichi Shimbun" and then proceeded to Europe and America for further studies in 1920. Upon return he was instructor in turn at Nihon and Chuo universities and Tokyo Women’s College and then professor at Hosei University and Tokyo Higher Normal School in 1938 till he rejoined his alma mater as instructor.
During World War II served as director of Cultural Bureau of Japan Publishing Association. Obtained a doctorate, LL.D., and was an authority on French sociology.
