After graduating from Tokyo University, Kunitaro Kuroyanagi started working for the Teikoku Bungaku magazine. He was appointed professor at First Higher School (1898). He left the teaching profession to establish Jinbun (Culture) magazine togerther with Masaharu Anezaki and others. But shortly he quitted to devote all his time to the compilation of Great English-Japanese Dictionary.
