In 1942 Leonid Poluektov graduated from the vocational school, during the Great Patriotic War worked as a milling-machine operator at the military factory in Serov. In 1947, after receiving secondary education in the school of working youth, he entered the medical faculty of Sverdlovsk State Medical Institute.
Leonid Poluektov defended his thesis on the topic of "Comparative assessment of surgical methods for the study of perforated ulcers of the stomach and duodenum". In 1967 defended his doctorate entitled "Repeated surgery on the stomach".
Upon graduation Leonid Poluektov was sent to the hospital in Tyumen, where at first worked as a surgeon, and in 1960 became the head of the surgical Department. In 1961 Leonid Vasilievich was elected assistant, and a year later – Associate Professor of the faculty surgery of the Omsk Medical Institute. In 1968 Leonid Vasilievich he was authorized in the professor’s rank, elected Dean of medical department. In 1972 was appointed pro-rector for academic work of the institute. In the march of 1974 Leonid Vasilievich was elected rector of the Omsk Medical Institute (now Omsk medical Academy), which he headed until December 1998. Since 1998 was advisor to the rector and professor of the Department of surgery of the Omsk medical Academy.
In 1980 Leonid Poluektov was elected a corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences, in 1986 became an Academician of RAMS. In 1995 he was awarded the title of valid foreign member of the Kazakhstan Academy of medical sciences. He was the member of all-Russian scientific society of surgeons and World Association of surgeons.
