He graduated from the 1st Voronezh Gymnasium (1904), where he took part in students’ performances.
In 1905 he worked in the Voronezh amateur troupe of the People's House. Since 1911 he performed on the stage of the Alexandria Theater. In 1927 and 1929 as a member of the troupe of the Alexandria Theater, he went on tour to Voronezh. Since 1924, began directorial activities (since 1937 the chief director of the Leningrad Academic Drama Theater named after AS Pushkin).
Since 1913, Vivien conducted pedagogical activities. In 1918 he organized and headed the school of theatrical skill (now St. Petersburg State Academy of Theatrical Art). Professor (1940), Head of the Department of Directing (1957).
