Gymnasium at Augsburg and Ascliatfenburg. Was student at the Catholic University at Dublin, and at the German Universities of Munster, Munich, Heidelberg, Wurzburg, and Gottingen, and member of the Seminary of the Royal Statistical Bureau at Berlin. Privatdocent at the University of Berlin, 1871.
Professor at Breslau, 1872. Professor at Strassburg i. E. 1882; Professor at Vienna, 1888.
Professor at Leipzig, 1889. Member of the Royal Academy of Sciences at Munich, of the Royal Society of Sciences at Leipzig, and of the Imperial Academy at St. Petersburg. Professor of Political Economy at the University of Munich since 1891. Doctor jur. utr. et phil.
Founder member, Verein für Sozialpolitik.
