Worked as a clerk in a hospital in Moscow, 1899-1923. Became famous first as a singer of folk songs, later as a collector of folk songs, instruments and costumes. Recorded on a phonograph over 400 folk songs, mainly from around Voronezh.
Founded a famous choir of Russian folk music, 1910. This choir, the Piatnitskii State Folk Song Choir, is still one of the main exponents of Russian folk music.
