Former family name: Murata. Married the daughter of Yoshizumi Miura.

Proceeded to Germany for further medical studies (1882). Returning home (1887) rejoined his alma mater as professor. Was the first to found faculties for pathology and pathological dissection studies in the university. Was also noted for his research in beri-beri disease and as a waka poet.
