Muhammad Dandamaev was born on September 2, 1928, in Unchukatl, Dagestan, USSR (nowadays the Russian Federation); the son of Abdulkadir Dandamaev, a school teacher, and Patimat Dandamaeva, a homemaker.
In 1947 Muhammad Dandamaev graduated from Unchukatli High School. From 1948 to 1952 he attended the Leningrad Pedagogical Institute (nowadays Herzen State Pedagogical University of Russia). In 1959 Dandamaev received a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences, Moscow.
From 1952 to 1954 Mukhammad Dandamayev worked as a history teacher in Dagestan. For the next four years, Dandamayev was a doctoral candidate while working at the History Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences in Moscow. He was hired in 1959 to the Institute of Oriental Studies in Leningrad.
From 1967 to 1998, for thirty-one years, Dandamayev headed the department of Ancient Orient of the Leningrad branch of the Institute of Oriental Studies. He was appointed as a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences in 1997, later becoming Chief Researcher at the Institute of Oriental Manuscripts of the academy.

Muhammad Dandamaev was married to Margaret Ugoleva, a school teacher. They had one child - Mariam.
