In 1954, before the end of the second Moscow Medical Institute, Anatoly Pokrovsky spent the whole year doing rotation at the Petrovsky clinic.
Pokrovsky's interest in surgery has grown into a career. In 1964, at the age of 34, he was elected head of the vascular surgery department of the Institute of Cardiovascular Surgery named after. A.N. Bakulev, which he headed for almost 20 years. Since 1983, Anatoly Pokrovsky became head of the department of vascular surgery at the Vishnevsky Institute of Surgery, where he continues to work today.
He is an author of more than 400 scientific papers, including 9 monographs which are generally devoted to an etiology, diagnosis, clinic and surgical treatment of diseases of arteries of a brain; coronary disease; renovascular hypertensia; aneurysm; nonspecific aortitis of a chest and ventral aorta and other diseases.
A.V. Pokrovsky successfully executed one of the first in the USSR such operations as a resection of aneurism of the ascending aorta, aortocoronary shunting and a resection of aneurism of heart, plastic of an aortic arch with its branches. He created school of vascular surgeons: 13 of his pupils became professors.
Pokrovsky is laureate of the State Prize of the USSR (1975), of the Russian Federation (2002), Honorary Professor of the Voronezh State Medical Academy (2003), President of the Russian Society of Angiologists and Vascular Surgeons, President of the European Society of Vascular Surgeons (since 2000).
Energy, dedication, constant scientific search have gained Anatoly Pokrovsky respect of his colleagues and became a reference point in his career.
