Iosif was a teacher of the Greek language and the civil history of Volyn Theological Seminary (1864-1866) and a teacher of Russian language and literature at a female gymnasium in Radom (1866-1867). He was the priest in Suvalki (1867-1872), Pastor of the church in Vilna (1878-1885), at the same time a teacher of the male gymnasium and the Teachers' Institute.
In 1885 he became a monk. He was a rector of Vilna Theological Seminary (1885-1891), at the same time the abbot of Trinity Monastery. Iosif was a Bishop of Brest, Vicar of Lithuanian Diocese (1891-1897), Bishop of Ostrogozhsk, vicar of the Voronezh diocese (1897-1900), at the same time abbot of Akatov Alekseevsky monastery. Also he was a Bishop of Mikhailovsk, Vicar of the Ryazan Diocese (since 1900).
