He graduated from the Physics and Mathematics Department of St. Petersburg University.
Since 1914 he is a teacher of mathematics at the men's gymnasium in Biysk, Tomsk province.

Since 1917, teacher, professor of the Department of Mathematics, then principal in Vyatka Pedagogical Institute.
Since 1927, Professor, Head of the Department of Mathematics (1932-1934), Dean of the Faculty of Education (1927-1928), Deputy Director (1929-1932) in Voronezh State University.
Since 1934, Head of the Department of Geometry, simultaneously (1936-1937) Director of the Research Physico-Mathematical Institute, Director (1934-1937) of Rostov State University.
Author of more than 80 works on the methodology of teaching and the history of mathematics, including the book "The Game of Figures".
In 1937 Dernov was declared an enemy and dismissed from his job. He was charged with participating in work in an anti-Soviet terrorist organization and preparing terrorist attacks against the leaders of the CPSU. Shot on the verdict of the Military Collegium of June 20, 1938.
In September 1958, his case was "stopped due to a lack of evidence." He was rehabilitated posthumously, in 1988 he was reinstated in the party.
