Nikolay Ivanovich was a teacher in various educational institutions since 1897. At the same time he was engaged in literary activity, was published in the magazines "Russian wealth", "European Herald", "Russian thought", "Education" and others.
In 1917-1919, Nikolay Ivanovich was in Voronezh, was a privat-docent of Voronezh State University, read a course on the history of Russian literature before Peter the Great in the Pedagogical Soviet Institute (1919), and gave public lectures (in particular, about the Decembrists). From December 15, 1917, an editor of the newspaper Voronezh Telegraph.
