After graduating from Tokyo University with a degree in medicine (1881) was appointed surgeon to the Imperial Army, and soon after proceeded to Germany for further studies (1884).
Returning home was surgeon general to the Imperial Army (1907). Though a doctor by profession is best re¬membered as a man of letters who held a doctorate, Litt.D. For a while edited his own magazine Shigaramisdshi and achieved literary fame with his maiden novel Maihime (Dancing Girl) (1896). Was di¬rector of Imperial Fine Arts Academy (1919) and a prolific writer, much respected and admired for his literary skill. Among his works are Uta1cata-v)-Ki (Record of a Transient Life), Kari (Wild Geese), Tahasebune (Boat on Takase River) and a translation of Goethe's Faust.
