Ren Sawai graduated from Tokyo University (1885) and then studied electric engineering in the United States.
Ren Sawai became an assistant to Thomas Alva Edison at his laboratory at Orange, New Jersey. He is said to have helped Edison in inventing his phonograph.
He inspected European countries before returning to Japan. He was appointed a technician at the Tokyo Telephone Exchange (1891) and then director of the Yokohama Telephone Exchange. He was also instructor at the Engineering Department, Tokyo University.
