Camp received his BA in 1967 from the University of California at Santa Barbara. He earned an MA from the University of Texas, Austin (1969), and both an MA and an MFA from the University of Iowa in Iowa City (1973, 1974).
Since 1976 Camp has been head of photography at Golden West College in Huntington Beach, California. Previous to that he was an instructor of photography and literature at Columbus College of Art and Design in Ohio (1974-76) and a literature instructor at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston (1969-70).
Camp was a Faculty Fellow in the History of Photography at Golden West College in 1977, a Grahame Fellow in Art at the University of Iowa in 1973 and a Danforth Fellow at the University of Texas' Black Studies Institute in 1969. Besides being a photographer, he was also a poet whose work has been published in various journals and quarterlies.
